A little fun with Tandoori Naan

Tandoori Naan is an Indian flatbread that gets its name from the tandoor (clay oven) in which it is baked.  Trader Joe's carries fresh and frozen tandoori naan in a few different flavors.  I usually keep a bag of the frozen tandoori naan around to have on hand if we cook some curry.
I was playing around with the naan recently and decided to try an Indian flavored ... pizza!  In this recipe, I went with a spinach theme and used the Punjab Spinach Sauce.  I'm not sure why, but I always seem to try "ethnic crossover" recipes with the Punjab Sauce...such as the Saag Paneer Lasagna that is in the cookbook.  For your own pizza experiments, you really can use any of the Indian sauces or curries that Trader Joe's carries...such as the Masala Simmer Sauce which is my all time favorite.

Indian Spinach Pizza

2 pieces of frozen Tandoori Naan, plain
3-4 Tbsp Punjab Spinach Sauce
1 cup frozen spinach, thawed and drained (squeeze the water out with your hands)
2 Tbsp fresh Ricotta
1/2 cup diced tomatoes

1) Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2) Spread the sauce on the top of each bread.
3) Sprinkle on the spinach and small pieces of ricotta cheese.
4) Bake for 5 minutes.
5) Remove from oven and top with tomatoes.

Makes 2 small pizzas

I seriously love TJ's naan. I use it with the frozen Indian food from my grocer, or just to satisfy my craving for yummy, chewy, crispy bread. I've found it heats up best on my pizza pan (metal with many air holes). Enjoy!

My favorite way to serve Tandoori Naan bread is to slather it with Trader Joe's White Bean Hummus, then add a layer of roasted veggies (red onions, mushrooms, zucchini, etc.). It's a healthy and delicious lunch! Serve with a bowl of soup for dinner!

BEWARE - Naan sold at trader's joes contains EGGS Please do understand naan is NOT supposed to contain eggs. I was at my friend's home for dinner and he served us naan bought from Trader Joes..We were all shocked when we came to know that it contained eggs.

How can they call it a naan when you put eggs in it?

This is ridiculous and they must stop selling naans containing eggs. Please stop hurting people who do not beleive in eating eggs or animal products and can't even imagine that naan might contain EGGS. This is outrageous!!

      Hi Priya,

Sorry to hear you had an unpleasant surprise with the naan. While in India, naan may tend to be made without eggs, many naan recipes online and in books do use eggs, Indian restaurants here as well, so I would always ask or read labels if that's a concern.

An acquaintance of mine from India has written a wonderful Indian cookbook and her naan recipe does not contain eggs but does contain yogurt. So that might be another thing to look out for if you are vegan. Even the traditional naan made with just flour, water, leavening, and salt often has butter brushed on at the end.

    Hi Deana,

Thanks for your reply. But there is a huge difference betweek butter and EGGs. No resuarant in India will ever sell Naans with Eggs.

Almost, all Indian's will have milk products but eggs are considered to be non-vegetarian and no true vegetarian will like to have it.

I think Trader's Joe's is not following the basics and hence in someway deceiving people who have always considered Naan to be vegetarian. It's totally unfair.

      Hey Priya,

Perhaps you should be reading the list of ingredients before buying or tasting a product and enquire before hand at restaurants how they prepare their food before you get overdramatic on this forum.

Don't be a ditz. What on earth do you mean by "true vegetarian"?? Vegans don't eggs, vegetarians do. Don't confuse the two terms. If you don't eat eggs, then check the label! It's not hard. Don't go around blaming Trader Joe's for your stupidity.
