Strawberry Frozen Yogurt
When I asked at the local ice cream shop how they make frozen yogurt, he looked at me completely puzzled. He wanted to know if I meant, how did they make yogurt? Because all they do is take yogurt, add a tiny sprinkling of sugar, and place in an ice cream churn.
I decided to make a strawberry version with just 3 ingredients: strawberries, yogurt, and sugar. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the explosive strawberry flavor. Trader Joe's has frozen strawberries year-round, which would do well in this recipe. I used TJ's Greek yogurt for extra creaminess, but you could use plain regular yogurt as well. I may try a version with some fresh basil next time.
An ice cream maker is necessary for this recipe. If you don't own an ice cream maker, maybe a friendly neighbor would loan you theirs in exchange for a batch of frozen yogurt? Be sure to try the plain yogurt version too — just omit the strawberries.
Strawberry Frozen Yogurt
4-5 cups fresh or frozen strawberries
2 cups Greek yogurt or plain yogurt
1/3 cup sugar
1. Freeze ice cream maker bowl overnight.
2. Place strawberries and sugar in a blender. Puree until mixture is bright red and smooth. You can pulse and make it chunky if you prefer.
3. Mix in yogurt and stir until well combined. Place mixture in ice cream maker according to manufacturer instructions.








The kids and I went to Red Mango last night as a special treat, and I was just thinking that it would be fun to experiment with our own frozen yogurt flavors, especially with all the great summer fruit!

I own the Cuisinart 1 1/2-qt ice cream maker, which has stellar reviews on Amazon. I have to admit, though, that I haven't compared across brands. I've owned this one for years and it hasn't broken down on me yet, so it may be a while before I test out another one. If anyone else has recommendations for a good ice cream maker, please post!

greek yogurt has triple the protein, one third the sugar of regular. it is richer, thicker... delicious and better for you :O)

Robin is correct - Greek yogurt is thicker, richer, and higher in protein. That's because it's more concentrated than regular yogurt. You can make your own Greek yogurt by putting regular yogurt in a strainer lined with cheesecloth or paper towels, and letting the yogurt "drip" into an empty bowl underneath. Let the yogurt drain for 3+ hours or overnight, in the fridge. What's left is thick Greek yogurt! It should be the consistency of sour cream. Just today I actually bought the Trader Joe's quart-sized Non-Fat Frozen vanilla yogurt (already prepared) from teh freezer section, and unlike most American fro-yo---it did actually taste like yogurt! It was very tangy---not creamy like ice cream. Unfortunately, for me, this was not a positive thing since I don't actually care for yogurt....but for you yogurt lovers, check it out! It even has the active cultures found in regular yogurt, which are so good for digestion.

Thanks for the tip, Tracy! I have avoided American fro-yo because it's so sweet, but now I will definitely try the TJ's version since I do enjoy the yogurty flavor. And you're right about the health benefits of yogurt. It's a daily part of our diet in our family!

I only recently found that I liked yogurt, crazy enough as it seems. Always enjoyed the frozen treat though (I know, weird right?) so I think we're going to give this one a try. Thanks!
